History of Las Tres ZZZ

In 1873 Eusebio Iglesias founded the Botería Eusebio Iglesias, located on Comedias street in Pamplona where the business began.

A few years later Gregorio Pérez, from Almudévar (Huesca), joined the bota bags shop as an apprentice. His dedication and wit enabled him to become a partner and the wineskins shop was renamed Botería E. Iglesias y G. Pérez.

After retiring, Eusebio sold the business to Gregorio, and the establishment underwent a remarkable development:

On the one hand, the innovations introduced by Gregorio in the production increased the reliability of his bota bags.

On the other hand, the birth in 1914 of his triplets Caridad, Carmen and Pilar, motivates the change of the company name to ‘Las Tres ZZZ’ (the three ZZZ, “z” representing “zagalas” in Spanish, meaning young lady or shepherdess) in honor of the newborn girls.

A fundamental aspect in the history of the brand comes from its link with the Sanfermines, a local celebration in the streets of Pamplona with international projection largely thanks to Ernest Hemingway.

Hemingway was known to much enjoy drinking from a bota bag (as can be seen in the attached photo). In his book entitled ‘The sun also rises’, set in ‘Los Sanfermines’, Hemingway tells how he entered our establishment and acquired two fine 4 and 3 liter wineskins from our predecessor (who apparently offered him ‘a very good price’). An excellent advertising investment!

The triplets’ elder brother, Gregorio, like his father, eventually took over the bota bags business. Soon he had to move part of the production to Calle del Carmen in the old town of Pamplona. Back then there were times of the year when they used the old city walls to hang out the wineskins to let them dry.

The picture shows some wineskin craftsmen finishing wineskins at the Calle del Carmen premises during the first half of the twentieth century.

The company continues forward and export becomes one of its most important activities, selling bota bags all over the world, especially in Latin America.

In 1970 a new factory was inaugurated on the outskirts of Pamplona, always keeping the store on Comedias Street as a point of sale.

Thirty people came to work in this new factory and between late 70s and early 80s of last century more than 200,000 wineskins were produced.

This period of maximum expansion was followed by the prohibition of drinking wine at work and at public shows, and this caused the decline in the daily use of bota bags.

Since then, two new generations have taken over the wineskin business, always committed to maintaining the utmost care to preserve this beautiful craftsmanship.

Gregorio Pérez entra como aprendiz en la boteria de Eusebio Iglesias

Gregorio Pérez se asocia con Eusebio Iglesias y la Botería pasa a llamarse "Botería Iglesias Pérez"

Nacen las trillizas Cari, Carmen y Pilar

Gregorio Pérez cambia el nombre de la botería en honor a que las trillizas salen adelante.

Hemingway visita los Sanfermines y compra su bota de Las Tres ZZZ. En 1.926 publica su libro "Fiesta" que incluye la visita a "una botería en el centro de Pamplona".

Gregorio Pérez hijo se hace cargo de la botería, lega la 2ª generación.

Las botas de vino de Las Tres ZZZ comienzan a exportarse en un principio a Países latinoamericanos.

Ana y Elena, hijas de Gregorio Pérez hjo, se hacen cargo de la botería, llega la 3ª generación.

La empresa cumple 100 años y comienza a fabricar las botas en las instalaciones actuales.

Las Tres ZZZ fabrica en ese año más de 215.000 botas de vino, record absoluto.

La 4ª generación se hace cargo de la empresa.
